What are some really good productivity software programs for a student?

I want to organize myself as best i can when i start college next year. Recently i have come across some really good open source programs that i think will be a great help. The ones i am definitely going to be using are Xmind (for brainstorming) and Gantt Project (for keeping track of project deadlines etc). I would highly recommend these programs to anyone. Does anyone else know any good programs that might help me out? Anyone use any programs for college themselves that they have found invaluable in helping your workload? Do let me know. Thanks,
